Ultimate Guide To Sewing Machines For Beginners

Ultimate Guide To Sewing Machines For Beginners

Why did I create the “Ultimate Guide to Sewing Machines for Beginners?"

Every girl wants their own things to be as unique as possible. As a crafter, I prefer to make my own things.

It is not just making it different but showing my character through the things I made by myself. I like to make my own pouches, small bags, pillows and embroider my favorite flowers on them. In order to make all these things,

Owning a sewing machine is essential.

There are so many different kinds of sewing machines on the market, you may be confused and find it difficult to choose the most suitable one. Based on my experience, here are some useful tips for beginners getting their first sewing machine.

Set a Budget

If you are a beginner and planning to sew occasionally, a basic mechanical machine should fill your needs. A basic machine usually includes a selection of foot attachments - zipper foot, buttonhole foot and maybe a plastic foot for delicate fabrics.

They can also allow you to handle basic repairs, simple clothing, and crafts projects. This kind of sewing machine usually costs no more than US$200.

Know Your Needs

Never buy more than what you will need. You should not pay a premium for a top-notch, computerized machine that has, for example, embroidery capability if you have no interest in the advanced features offered.

If you are interested in mending clothes or making basic items such as pillow cases or pouches that can be done with simple straight stitching, a mechanical sewing machine is all you need. These machines are easily operated and reliable.

Brands

I prefer well-established brand such as Singer and Brother. They usually have wider range of basic mechanical machines for beginners at an affordable price. Go to the local shops and ask for assistance. They can give you a brief introduction to each brand. A brand may offer a special price on particular model/models at various times throughout the year.

Read Reviews

According to research, 90% of the people read online reviews before visiting a business. Check online reviews about what other users want to say about the model that you like. You will learn how other consumers feel about the machine and can validate the how well features of the machine work (or don’t!).

Get a Test Drive

Look up a local dealer and try using the machines yourself. Bring in few fabrics or even a sewing project. The dealer will show you how to use the machine. Feel the machine, make sure it is sturdy and solidly built.

Try using the machine and do some stitches, it should make very even top and bottom stitches. Try all the levers and attachments to make sure they are well constructed. At this point, you should have a feeling of whether the machine is easy to work with.

User Friendly

The machine must be well-illuminated. You need to clearly see what/where you are sewing.. It should be lightweight so that you can carry it without hurting your back. It should fit your working space. The foot pedal should be stable and with an anti-slip base so that it won’t move around. Look for machines where the stitch is even on top and bottom. You can use the reverse and sew at the same time.

Read the Manual

Always read the instruction manual. Check the instruction manual to see if it is well written and has clear illustrations. The company website should have the instruction manuals as a pdf.  Read through them first to get an understanding of its functionality. After you buy the machine, you may need to read the instruction from time to time to help solving issues such as a stuck bobbin.

Can You Upgrade?

You may want to consider if there is other equipment you can purchase for your machine in the future. Some models have add-on equipment, such as an embroidery unit, that you can purchase separately. Although you may not see a need that will require using additional equipment in short run, it’s always good to keep in mind.

Is There After Sales Support?

The great part about the internet is that you can shop around right from your future sewing table. Check out the websites and reviews from others that have bought the machine you are considering.

Warranty and Repair Service

Ask the dealer or search the company website what the warranty covers and what does it excludes. Repair service may take few days to months. Find a reputable dealer. Find out if you can return your machine to the shop where you bought it for repairs. If not, find out where you have to bring it to.

If you buy it online, make sure there is a service shop in your area or see if the offer free shipping. Keep the original box and packaging in case it needs to be shipped for repair. Bear in mind that repairs made by technicians who are not factory-authorized can void the manufacturer's warranty.

How to make a Zipper Pouch with Round Fish Embroidery – Final

,

How was the Round Fish embroidery you did last week? I hope everyone is satisfied with your work and has a lovely pair of round fish of your own.

I am going to show you how to make the inner layer of the pouch and how to sew the zipper, inner layer and outer layer together to make the pouch. Make sure you have a matching color zipper for your pouch and have enough pins to pin different things together before starting to sew.

Before you start sewing, iron the fabrics because there are creases from using the embroidery bracket. It could be too late for ironing after you start sewing them together.

P.S. I will start a new project next week, stay tuned.
