Learn to Make a Homemade Rosemary Mint Shampoo

Hair health and hair loss is something many of us struggle with.  This Homemade Rosemary Mint Shampoo can help restore the health of your hair.

Rosemary has been used for centuries, and mint for the last 50 years, in the treatment of hair health and excessive hair loss.   There are many store-bought shampoos out on the market today, but you are never too sure exactly what is in them.  Most have the smell of Rosemary and mint, but they have a lot of extras too.  This homemade Rosemary Mint shampoo has just the right amount of rosemary and mint essential oils needed to give you the benefits for healthy hair and scalp without a bunch of added ingredients you do not need.

About the Ingredients

Castile Soap:

Castile soap is vegetable-based soap with no animal bi-products or synthetic ingredients. It was originally made from olive oil from the Castile region of Spain, hence the name. Castile soap is non-toxic and extremely biodegradable making it a great product that is safe to use for so many things.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that contains antioxidants.  These antioxidants can help reduce the effects of free radicals in your body caused by environmental stressors.  This is also true when used topically on your hair.  Vitamin E may also reduce the negative effects of UV damage to your hair, as well as the daily stress and damage our day to day hair routine can cause.

Almond Oil:

Almond oil is full of Vitamins, proteins, and fatty acids, known as omegas.  All of these are why almond oil is so beneficial in making hair strong and healthy.  Almond oil improves the shine and luster that the environment can damage.

About the Essential Oils

Essential Oil Benefits

Rosemary:

  • Rosemary helps to increase circulation to your scalp which stimulates the follicles, promoting hair growth and regrowth.
  • Rosemary is also very well known for its anti-inflammatory properties.  This helps in hair health by soothing an inflamed or irritated scalp.
  • In addition to helping promote hair growth, Rosemary can also help treat and prevent dandruff by moisturizing a dry flaky scalp.
  • Peppermint

    • Peppermint has only recently (the past 50 years) been for the treatment of hair loss.  Because of its vasodilating properties, it may stimulate circulation and promote hair growth and regrowth.
    • Peppermint also has anti-inflammatory properties, so like Rosemary, it may help sooth an irritated scalp which will increase the health of your hair.

    Rosemary Mint Shampoo Uses:

    Shampoo

This Homemade Rosemary Mint Shampoo can be used 2-3 times per week for those with sensitive skin and 3-4 times for normal skin.  Wet your hair thoroughly, apply shampoo and lather completely.  I like to let it sit in my hair for a couple minutes and then rinse completely with warm water.

    Gifts

As with any homemade product, the Rosemary Mint Shampoo can be used as a stand-alone gift or part of a basket of handmade goodies.  A nice bottle and a pretty label will turn it into a gift.  You can download some printable labels here:

    Quick Tips

    1. Storage:  Store your shampoo in the bottle of your choice.  Your bottle does not have to be super fancy.  You can even use an old shampoo bottle.  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
    2. Although there is Vitamin E, which helps with preservation, there is coconut milk in this recipe.  I would give the shampoo a shelf life of 3-4 weeks.  You can half the recipe if needed.
    3. If you are finding that your hair is a little to heavy after rinsing you can rinse with apple cider vinegar (think of this as your conditioner).

How to Make a Natural Anti-Aging Eye Serum!

This anti-aging eye serum goes on smooth and absorbs into your skin fast. Using a roller bottle allows for a very gentle application to the delicate skin of our under eye. After washing your face apply the anti-aging serum under your eyes by rolling the roller ball gently for 2-3 passes.

Essential oils are most often used for aromatherapy, but many essential oils have skin care properties as well. As a working 40 year old mother of 3 (two still in diapers) I can use all the help I can get when it comes to anti-aging!

Lavender:  Lavender is known best for its calming and de-stressing properties in aromatherapy that it would only make sense for it to be so beneficial in anti-aging.  Lavender has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties.  Lavender is great for helping reduce fine lines, sun spots, and improve elasticity in your skin.

Sandalwood:  Sandalwood is known for having anti-inflammatory properties.  This may help with the appearance of puffiness under the eye.

Geranium: Geranium is often used for acne treatment because of its antibacterial and antiseptic properties.  It also has  a moisture balancing property which makes it a great addition to any face care regimen.

Cleary Sage:  Cleary Sage is best known as an antioxidant. As an antioxidant cleary sage can prevent and repair the harmful damage from free radicals that are believed to cause the signs of aging.

Rose:  Rose is an ingredient seen in so many products that have to do with anti-aging. This is largely due to the fact that Rose oil has so many properties.  It is anti-inflammatory, an antibacterial, and an antioxidant, making it a logical essential oil to add to any skincare product.

    Ingredients & Instructions:

    Ingredients:

    1 t Vitamin E

    2 t Rosehip Seed oil

4 drops of Lavender essential oil

3 drops of Sandalwood essential oil

2 drops of Geranium essential oil

3 drops of Clary Sage essential oil

2 drops of Rose essential oil

    Almond oil

    10 ml roller bottle

    Instructions:

Using a dropper or a small funnel add all essential oils

Using a dropper add Vitamin E (too thick for funnel)

    Add rosehip seed oil

Fill remainder of the roller bottle with almond oil

    Insert roller ball

Cap & mix thoroughly by gently inverting the bottle several times

Tip 1:  After applying the serum to your under eye, use your ring fingers to gently blend. Your ring fingers apply very little pressure to your delicate under eye area.

Tip 2:  This is an under eye serum, the oils have a purpose other than scent (see above), we do not want to overdo the essential oils when using a product on the sensitive skin of your face.

Tip 3:  If you like this recipe, pair it with the Anti-Aging Natural Face Cream

    Uses

I use my anti-aging eye serum both in the morning and evening.  I am more generous with the amount I use in the evening because I have more absorption time.  I do not blend the oils in at night.  In the mornings I use the normal amount that will allow for immediate absorption which allows me to apply my makeup immediately.

Tip 1:  Use an old soap bottle instead of purchasing a new one.  Reduce, reuse, recycle, right?

Tip 2:  Use as much or little of the essential oils depending on your preference.

Tip 3:  Be sure to mix your body wash with each use.  The Shea butter and coconut oil will separate.  Shake the bottle a few time and you are good to go.

Tip 4:  A little goes a long way. Because this wash does not have any added water or extra fillers it does not take much to produce enough lather for a full body clean.

    Uses:

I use this body wash for my morning showers because I really like the energizing properties of eucalyptus and peppermint.  It also has a de-stressing property which makes this blend the perfect way to begin your day!

How to Make a Three Ingredient Whipped Body Butter

This whipped body butter recipe is great for any time of the year.  It is so moisturizing that it relieves the dry itchy skin of winter and absorbs so fast it is the perfect moisturizer for summer too!

    Ingredients:

    Instructions:

    In a double boiler:

Combine Cocoa Butter and coconut oil

    Set heat to medium

Stir continuously until all pieces are melted

    Stir ingredients until melted

    Remove from heat

Pour liquid in to a bowl large enough to use a hand mixer with

Pour liquid in to a separate bowl

Allow liquid to cool almost to solid (your finger should be able to press through easily but it is not hot to touch.

Add 20 drops of Lavender, 10 drops of eucalyptus, and 5 drops of tea tree essential oils

Whip at high speed with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy (about 5 minutes)

Tip 1:  Allowing it to cool to ALMOST solid is key to getting the smoothest body butter.

Tip 2: A little goes a long way.  You do not need globs of lotion so start with a small amount and grab a little more as you go.

    Uses

I use the whipped body butter every day after my shower.  I love it because it moisturizes, but also absorbs fast so my skin feels soft and I can still get dressed right away.  With store bought lotion I would always have to wait a few minutes for the lotion to dry before I could get dressed which would cause me to skip lotion often because I was in a hurry.

Learn how to make lotion bars that can go with you anywhere. Perfect for this dry hand weather and a great pick me up.

Lotion bars are a great alternative to carrying around bottles of lotion that can leak in your purse or bag!  I keep a lotion bar in a resealable bag in a pocket of all my bags.  When my hands are feeling dry all I have to do is rub the lotion bar like I was washing my hands and it starts to melt enough to moisturize my hands perfectly.  Not too much, not too little, but just right.

    Ingredients & Instructions:

    Ingredients

    Instructions:

    1. Combine shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil in the double boiler

    2. Set heat to medium and continue stirring until melted completely

    3. Add essential oils

    4. Turn off heat

    5. Transfer liquid to the measuring cup (optional but much easier to pour into molds)

    6. Pour liquid in to silicone molds

    7. Let the liquid cool until solid

    8. Remove from silicone mold

    9. Store in air tight containers

Tip 1:  You can put the mold in the freezer to cool faster.

Tip 2:  I live in Florida so I store my extra bars in the refrigerator until I am ready to use.

Tip 3:  You can make smaller or larger batches by using less or more of the shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil.  Just be sure and use equal parts of all 3 and adjust the oils accordingly.

    Uses

The lotion bars are perfect for moisturizing dry hands.  They are also great for softening calluses on hard working hands.  You can also use them to treat cracked heel, just rub a generous amount on your heels and feet at night and cover your feet with socks to let the lotion really soak in and soften your feet and heels.

    Materials:

    • Needle and Tread
    • 1 Fabric covered alligator clip
    • Scissors
    • Lighter
    • Glue gun
    • 2 5-inch ribbon pieces of 3/8 inch ribbon

Learn how to make a small 3 layer hair bow for girls. A great bow to make two of because it looks adorable in pigtails!

    Instructions

Fold the 3 inch piece of ribbon in half, length wise and then again width wise and the cut the edge going from the middle of the fold to the end corner of the ribbon.  Your ends will look like the end of an arrow (see figure 1)

Use the lighter to heat the edges just enough to keep the ribbon from fraying.  We do not want the ribbon to catch fire! Just enough heat to melt the edges a little.

Fold the 5 inch and 4 inch pieces in half to make a crease line that you will use as your guide.  This will make your loops even.

Put a small drop of glue on each side of the crease and fold your ribbon end to the glue making a double loop ribbon.  Repeat for the other 5-inch and the 4 -inch ribbon.

Now, place the two bigger loop pieces together in an X and then place the third loop ribbon on top of those two length wise so that it is between the narrow part of your X.

Carefully fold the Bow in half length wise

Using the needle and thread, run the needle through the middle of the, make two passes. Then tie a knot.  This helps keep the pinch in the middle of the bow

Next using a hot glue gun place a strip of glue on the 3/8 inch ribbon and wrap it around the pinched part of the bow.

Now we attach or final layer.  Put a small line of glue on the pattern side of the 3-inch piece of ribbon.  Glue it to the bottom of the ribbon perpendicular with the top piece.  Make sure you are centered.

Time to attach the alligator clip.  Using the hot glue gun put a strip of glue on the top of the fabric covered alligator clip and attach to the center of the back of the bow. If you are not making your own fabric covered alligator clip, I like these clips on the right-------------->. https://amzn.to/2M3f6SU

This style of bow has so many options as far as color combinations go.  You can use all different colors, all the same colors, and everywhere in between.

Learn how to make this easy Citrus Salt Scrub you can create in minutes. The citrus aroma is a great way to start your day!

    Quick Tips

Tip 1:  Using more Epsom salts will give it more exfoliating power, but any more than 1 ½ cups and it becomes too dry and abrasive.

Tip 2:  The coconut oil can cause your shower to be slippery.  Make sure you rinse with hot water to dissolve the coconut oil from the shower floor.

    Citrus Salt Scrub Uses

I use the citrus salt scrub in the mornings when I shower because the citrus aroma helps wake me up.  Another benefit is the coconut oil moisturizes my skin enough that I do not need to use lotion.

Keeping a small jar of citrus salt scrub next to the kitchen sink is a great way to scrub off some of the stubborn odors you can get on your hands while cooking.  Again, the coconut oil will moisturize your hands too, keeping them from drying and cracking.

    WA Spike Bow

Easy Spike Bow: Fast, Easy and perfect for beginner bow makers!

Like most of the bow makers out there I started making my own bows because it was getting very expensive to buy all the bows I loved so much.  I started with staple colors and have added accent ribbon to my collection as I come across sales, discount, and clearance ribbon.  Now I can make unique custom bows for any occasion.

I began my bow making with easy bows, like this spike bow, and got more complex as time went on.  I recommend this route so you do not get frustrated and quit before you start.

    Materials:

    • Needle and Tread
    • 1 Fabric covered alligator clip
    • Scissors
    • Lighter
    • Glue gun
    • 7 4inch ribbon pieces (7/8-1 inch work best)
    •             *I used 3 pieces of my main print, 2 each of my accent colors)
    • 1 2 inch piece of 3/8 inch ribbon

    Instructions:

    1. Using and alligator clip for an edge marker, cut all 7 pieces on both ends to make the ends look like the end of an arrow (see photo)

    2. Use the lighter to heat the edges just enough to keep the ribbon from fraying.  We do not want the ribbon to catch fire! Just enough heat to melt the edges a little.

    3. Pinch the first piece of ribbon in half directly in the center of the ribbon

    4. Using the needle and thread, run the needle through the middle of your first piece of ribbon, BUT only until the needle is halfway through (see photo for reference).

    5. Repeat step 3 & 4 with each remaining piece of ribbon.

    6. When all pieces are on the needle thread the needle through two times and then wrap the remaining thread around until there is just enough to tie a knot.

    7. Next using a hot glue gun place a strip of glue on the 3/8 inch ribbon and wrap it over the thread.

    8. Time to attach the alligator clip.  Using the hot glue gun put a strip of glue on the top of the fabric covered alligator clip and attach to the center of the back of the bow. How to make a Double Happiness Sachet – (Part 2)

    ,

Did you find the Double Happiness embroidery mesmerizing? Although it takes longer time to complete the embroidery, the result of the embroidery, especially with the DMC satin floss, will not let you down. The exceptional sheen that the thread brought cannot be compared with other embroidery floss. The scented sachet I used was bought from a dollar store. You can make your own scented sachet if you have your own. You can also get them from Amazon (MYARO 12 Packs Lavender Scented Sachets). You can make this sachet without hanger so that you can put it in drawer or even put it underneath your pillow to give you a s relaxing good sleep.

I will show you how to use repetitive pattern for embroidery next week.

How to make a Double Happiness Sachet – (Part 1)

A dear friend of mine asked me to make her a sachet, specifically requesting for a double happiness embroidery. Double Happiness originally refers to the simultaneous arrival of two happy events, namely “Double Happiness”. When people get married, they always post Double Happiness on the door of the wedding room to express their congratulations. I used the DMC satin floss this time for the Double Happiness. This thread is the shiniest DMC thread available. It glides through fabric and brings an exceptional sheen to any embroidery projects.

I am going to show you how to prepare the material and start the embroidery.
